Dr. Dan R. Salden founded Hawaii Whale Research Foundation in 1987.

Dan, a professor, colleague and friend, passed away on July 18, 2012.    Dan dedicated and devoted his life to studying Humpback Whales and other Marine Mammals.  Among Dan’s many accomplishments, he created The Hawaii Whale Research Foundation, he has authored, co-authored and been acknowledged in numerous papers, created a multifaceted data base, and an online interactive Humpback Whales of Maui book.  “Dr. Dan” will live on through each of us who have been fortunate enough to know, learn, and work beside him.  Dan has touched all of our hearts and changed our lives forever.  The memories he has given us, have been monumental and  extraordinary.  Dan has been a gift to all of us, and will be sorely missed.
